Garden Room

Chorlton, Manchester

A modest extension to a 1930's semi-detached house in south Manchester. The client's brief called for a living space where the family could sit and enjoy the garden while maintaining a connection to the open plan kitchen-dining room at the rear of the house.

The simple mono-pitched form has well-proportioned glazed openings which provide a strong relationship to the garden and introduce generous natural light into the space. These qualities will be enhanced by an openable rooflight, which will deliver fresh air and views of the sky from the main seating area.

A new landscaped terrace features both structured and informal areas for planting. This surface acts as a plinth for the new room and provides a seamless extension into the garden.
