New Hey Road

Cheadle Village, Stockport

A reconfiguration of the ground floor of an Edwardian house to create a large kitchen and new dining space for contemporary living.

The original proposals involved a side extension with glazed roof, infilling the area adjacent to the existing outrigger. Due to budget constraints the project was scaled back, and we have worked within the footprint of the existing house to create a spacious L-shape kitchen with central island in the former dining room, and a comfortable dining alcove, with built-in bench, in the former kitchen space.

Existing brick openings have been widened and sills have been dropped to produce a feeling of light and space. Elegant windows and a tall glazed door, opening out onto the west-facing garden, add to the atmosphere of brightness and airiness.

To ensure that the room is comfortable in winter as well as summer, the external solid brick walls have been lined with insulated plasterboard internally and the timber floor has been insulated from below, retaining the existing pine floor boards.

Bespoke ash furniture elements and timber flooring provide a soft finish which combines with the clean lines of the kitchen joinery to provide an air of calm and natural warmth.
